Overview
The HLT40221 Certificate IV in Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Primary Health Care Practice prepares Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Workers to deliver culturally safe primary health care services within Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisations (ACCHOs), government health services and community health settings.
This nationally recognised qualification provides learners with the knowledge, skills and professional capabilities required to support individuals, families and communities through health promotion, clinical care, chronic disease management and preventative health initiatives. Delivered by experienced Aboriginal Health Practitioners and health professionals, the program combines classroom learning, practical skills development and supervised workplace experience to ensure graduates are job-ready and equipped to make a positive difference within their communities
Qualification Description
This qualification reflects the role of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health practitioners. It is specific to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people who work as part of a multidisciplinary health care team providing primary health care services to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander clients and communities.
They provide culturally safe health and wellbeing promotion, preventative health care and clinical treatment services in a diversity of locations including urban, rural and remotesettings. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health practitioners use initiative and judgement with in the parameters of practice standards, treatment protocols and clinical super vision arrangements established by the employing organisation.
This qualification provides a pathway to work in a range of health care settings including Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander community organisations, and the public or private health sector.
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health practitioners are registered with the Aboriginaland Torres Strait Islander Health Practice Board of Australia (ATSIHPBA) and, only when registered, can use the protected title of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander health practitioner. However, registration is not automatically linked to an individual’s certificationin this qualification. Current requirements for practitioners to complete an accredited program of study, and how training organisations accredit their program, should be checked with the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Practice Accreditation Committee (ATSIHPAC).

Credit Transfer and Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)
If you have any prior qualifications or experience working in this industry, please speak to administration, Senior Teacher or RTO Business Manager to see if you are eligible for credit transfer or RPL.
Industry Pre-requirements
On entry to the course Learners must supply evidence of the following mandatory checks:
- Australian Federal Police (AFP) National Criminal History Check
- Working With Children Check (WWCC)
- Immunisations and screening.

Skills Development Placement
If you are not currently employed or volunteering in industry, during your course you will be required to complete Skills Development /vocational placement so you can start practising your new skills in a real-world environment.
You’ll be required to work shifts determined by your placement provider, and these can include early mornings or late nights, any day of the week, including public holidays. Dijan Training Program will assist in arranging suitable placements
Completing placement is compulsory, and you will be expected to manage family and work commitments to complete your shifts. You are required to complete 1216 hours of placement to satisfy this component of your qualification.
